When you look around our web site you’ll notice a recurring theme of footprints, and the phrase ‘Make a Difference’. There are a lot of financial planning businesses in Adelaide, and we’ve set out to make ours different from the rest.
Why the Footprints?
A couple of years ago I was inspired by the photo of Neil Armstrong’s footprint on the moon’s surface. They say that his footprints will remain for millions of years because there’s no wind to blow them away.
This made me think about the ‘footprint’ we leave behind on our world.
Over the past decade most of my uncles and aunts have passed away. At their funerals we heard about the things they did, and the impact they had on their children and friends. When I look at my cousins, I can see how their parents have influenced their lives, and I can see this influence being handed down to their children.
My uncles and aunts may be gone, but they’ve left behind their footprints in the form of children, family traditions, love for music and camping and other hobbies. Some were also able to intervene in the financial lives of their children and grandchildren.
When I tell this story to clients, and speak about the footprint concept, they understand what I’m talking about. Don’t we all want to leave a footprint behind, to feel like our life has been important and that after we’re gone there’s still a part of us that lives on?
Making a Difference in Your World
The footprint idea is linked with the idea of making a difference in your world.
Most people want to feel like their time on earth meant something – that it mattered. We can all make a difference in our world.
- For some people, this may involve being a good parent or grandparent and having a positive influence in the lives of our families.
- It can involve volunteer work and giving of your time, money and other resources.
- It could involve teaching a skill to other people.
The important thing is that this is unique for every person. We all have different skills, abilities and passions, and it’s important to work out what’s important to us as individuals.
And ‘Your World’ is as big as you define it. It could be your family, your suburb or a club or organisation you belong to. It could be bigger – you may have a desire make a difference at a national or global level. You could do this by getting involved with organisations that represent causes you feel strongly about. The sky’s the limit.
What Does It Mean for Financial Planning?
